A tree is like a hand

A number of words for tree around the world develop the metaphor of tree being like a hand sticking out of the ground.

Chinese

One Chinese word for tree is  mù  :

          m  manus, manual, palm, mitt

     U   up, under

 

The character forms the downward sweeping boughs of a conifer tree. The symbolism of the phonetic word includes m, a hand; and u, which recognizes that trees both grow up into the sky, and under the ground with the fingers of their root system.  More - Shù.
